ALEJANDRO CANTORAL
My name is Alejandro Cantoral, a visual artist from New York City area. I want to create work that reflects emotional and cultural issues that affect Millennials and other younger generations. Youth culture puts more and more emphasis on celebrating people and voices that are under-represented, and embracing the idea the people aren’t bound to identify particular norms, such as traditional sexual or gender identities. The criss-crossing of identities can cause greater internal reflection and self-realization, but also confusion about who we are and what we stand for.
My work comes from mixing separate identities within our current culture. I find fashion magazines and graphic design to be the perfect tool for creating these compositions. I break down images that generate inspiration, or insecurities, and create something new that can contradict, celebrate, or emphasize the original parts. I hope to show how many younger people feel about themselves: confident, remixed, and sometimes vulnerable or broken.
